How To Get Rid Of Upper Lip Hairs At Home

Having upper lip hair growth is as common as having scalp hairs. However, due to hormonal reasons, some women have thick dark upper lip hairs. Having a moustache on and stepping out of your house can be a nightmare for any women.

Opting for the thread or wax seems the obvious choice to get rid of these unwanted hairs. But what if you don’t have the time to go to a salon or you are just too lazy to step out. Wouldn't it be great if you could remove these hairs at home and at no cost?

Try these simple home remedies to turn your upper lip hairs lighter, thinner and make them disappear gradually in a few weeks.

1. Milk and Turmeric

  • Mix 1 tablespoon turmeric powder with 1 tablespoon milk and apply on your upper lip.

  • Leave it on for half an hour.

  • Once it completely dries and has hardened, rub it gently with wet fingers in the direction opposite to your hair growth.

  • When the paste comes off completely wash with cold water.

Do this every day for a couple of weeks to start seeing results. The lactic acid in milk and turmeric together will not only help you get rid of hairs but also keep your skin moisturised and healthy.

2. Egg White and Corn Flour

  • In a bowl, whisk 1 egg white with 1 teaspoon of cornflour and 1 tablespoon of sugar until a smooth paste is formed.

  • Apply the paste on your upper lip and wait for half an hour till it dries out completely.

  • Gently peel off the paste in the opposite direction of your hair growth.

  • Rinse with cold water.

Egg white has an astringent property that tightens the shrink down the pores and tightens the skin. Repeat this 3-4 times a week. Within a month, you will see a noticeable reduction in the hairs.

3. Lemon and Sugar

  • Squeeze one lemon and add 1 tablespoon sugar to it.

  • Stir well until it becomes a paste.

  • Apply this paste over the upper lip.

  • Let it dry for 20 minutes.

  • Now gently scrub it off with wet fingers and rinse with cold water.

Sugar is generally used for waxing and scrubbing purpose, it removes hair effectively and permanently. Lemon, on the other hand, contains acids that have bleaching and lightening properties. Apply this paste every alternate day to see results.

4. Gelatin and Milk

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of unflavoured gelatin with 1 ½ teaspoon of milk.

  • Microwave this mixture for 10-12 seconds.

  • While the mixture is slightly warm apply it to your upper lip.

  • Once dried, peel it off against the direction of your hair growth.

  • Rinse with cold water.

Gelatin is sticky in nature and works as an effective remedy to remove facial hairs. It can also be used to make peel-off masks that can remove blackheads and unwanted hair but keep it away from your eyes and eyebrows.

5. Honey

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of honey and a ½ tablespoon of lemon juice in a bowl.

  • Apply the mixture to your upper lip.

  • Leave it on for 30 minutes.

  • Gently remove the honey by massaging with wet fingers.

  • Rinse the area with cold water.

Honey is a milder option for wax. Lemon juice is a bleaching and lightening agent. Together they help lighten the hairs and detach them from the hair follicles. Apply this daily to see results.

6. Sugar Waxing

  • Place 3-4 chamomile tea bags in a saucepan filled with water. Bring to a boil.

  • After boiling for 2 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat and let the tea cool for 30 minutes.

  • Take ¼ cup of the tea and pour this water into a separate saucepan.

  • Keep the saucepan over medium heat, add 2 cups of sugar and ¼ cup squeezed lemon juice to the tea.

  • Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce the water for a few minutes.

  • Now pour the mixture in a bowl and let it cool.

  • Use a popsicle stick to spread the mixture over your upper lip.

  • Place a cotton waxing strip over the area and let it stay for a few seconds.

  • Pull off the waxing strip quickly in the opposite direction of your hair growth.

This gives similar results to waxing at salons. If you have any extra sugar wax left you can even store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use later.

Alternative Methods

Sugar Wax

If you don't have chamomile tea, don’t worry you can still make your sugar wax.

  • Take a saucepan and add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and water and 1 cup of sugar.

  • Heat the mixture till the sugar dissolves and a thick paste is formed.

  • Transfer this paste into a bowl.

  • Use this just like the chamomile and sugar wax to remove unwanted hairs.

Sugar Mask

  • Directly pour some sugar in a pan and start heating till it melts down completely.

  • Then, add lemon juice to it and mix well.

  • Allow the mixture to cool down.

  • Use this for waxing your upper lip hairs.

7. Chana Dal Flour

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of chana dal flour (besan) with some water and a pinch of turmeric to form a thick paste.

  • Apply this paste on your upper lip and wait for 30 minutes.

  • When it dries out completely, scrub it off against the direction of the hair growth.

You can use any other dal/lentils instead of chana dal. Just ground it to a fine powder and use it in the same way as chana dal. You can also replace water with milk or yogurt to get extra moisturised skin and a pinch of turmeric for better results. Apply this on your upper lip area 4 times a week.

8. Potato Juice

  • Soak 2 tablespoons of yellow lentils in water overnight.

  • Strain them in the morning and grind them to form a thick paste. Add 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon fresh potato juice. You can grate a potato and extract its juice.

  • Add 1 teaspoon honey to this paste and mix well.

  • Apply a thick layer on the upper lip and let it stay for 20 minutes.

  • Once dried, scrub the paste off in the direction opposite to the hair growth.

  • Wash the area with cold water.

This pack will not only help remove unwanted hairs but also unclog pores. So, you can use this pack on your entire face as well. Potato juice acts as a bleaching agent and can lighten the hairs.

9. Wheat Flour

  • Mix 1 tablespoon wheat flour with 1 tablespoon milk and a pinch of turmeric to form a thick paste.

  • Apply the paste on the upper lip area and wait for at least 20 minutes for it to dry.

  • Once dried, slowly peel off the mask in a direction opposite to the hair growth.

  • Rinse the area with cold water.

This pack loosens the hair follicles and peeling off in the opposite direction pulls out the loose hairs. Use this hair removal pack every 3-4 times a week to see results.

10. Corn Flour

  • Mix 1 teaspoon cornflour and 2 teaspoons of milk to form a paste.

  • Apply the paste and let it dry for 20 minutes.

  • Slowly peel this mask off in a direction opposite to the hair growth.

The paste sticks to your skin and peeling off removes the hair. Repeat this 2-3 times a week.

11. Spearmint Tea

  • Put 1 teaspoon of dried, ground spearmint leaves in a cup and add boiling water.

  • Cover the cup and let it steep for 10 minutes.

  • Strain the tea infused water and add a little honey for taste.

  • Drink 2 to 3 cups of spearmint tea a day.

Elevated levels of androgen in women suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) can lead to unwanted facial hairs. Recent research in Turkey has shown that spearmint tea has an anti-androgenic effect in women with PCOS. Drinking a few cups of spearmint tea can control the production of androgen and combat excess facial and body hair.

12. Toothpaste

  • Take 1 teaspoon of toothpaste and mix it with a few drops of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon salt.

  • Apply this paste on the upper lip and let it stay for 20 minutes.

  • Once dried scrub it off in the direction opposite to hair growth.

  • Wash with cold water.

Lemon has bleaching and lightening properties whereas salt acts as an excellent exfoliator. The toothpaste loosens the hair from follicles and scrubbing removes the hair from the skin.

Tips and Precautions

  • Do not ever shave your upper lip hairs even if you are in a hurry because shaving leads to thicker hairs in the future. Also, it only removes the hair from the top and not from the follicles so the growth will come back pretty fast.

  • Do not use scissors to cut the upper lip hair because this method just like shaving will result in thicker hairs.

  • Consult a dermatologist if you experience any irritation or increased growth of hair after using these home remedies as you might be allergic to a ingredient.

  • Do not use any hair removal creams on your face as they may darken the area. Also, the hair growth increases with these creams.
